The Integrating Model of Adaptation-Relevance and Ambiguity

Abstract: This paper attempts to explicate discourse ambiguity in daily communication by means of combining the merits of Adaptation Theory by Verschueren with those of Relevance by Sperber & Wilson. It claims that ambiguity involves making choices and interpreting the utterances, which is in a dynamic course of adaptation and relevance. It provides a new perspective for the study of ambiguity.
