INTRODUCTION
Changeling is an Oscar nominated film. It is directed by the renowned director
Clint Eastwood. The world-famous Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie stars the heroine Christine Collins, whose consummate acting skills injects vitality to the true-to-life movie and makes it matchless. With the joint efforts of the cast, this movie possesses timeless artistic charm which touches the spectacles’ heart chords all the time.
Chapter Ⅰ The main plot of the movie The single mother Christine Collins is a supervisor of a telephone company who lives with her only son Walter in their moderately comfortable house in Los Angeles. One day, she returns home after getting off work, only to find her son missing. Due to her own fruitless search, she calls the police for help. Several months later, she is informed that her son is still found alive in Illinois. Before long, she is arranged to welcome her son’s return at the railway station. At the first sight, she recognizes that the boy is not her son. However, the police purposely ignore her reaction and convince her that her son unavoidably experiences some changes after a long-time separation. Although she firmly believes that the boy is not her son, she still accepts to take him home, for she dose not know how to deal with the journalists’ continuous questions.
Later on, she tells the police again that the boy they have found is not her son. The police, with no intension to recheck this case, claim that she is an irresponsible mother who regards her son as a burden and is unwilling to take care of him.
With the concerted cooperation of Walter’s teacher and dentist, she betrays the truth to the public. Unexpectedly, the police ruthlessly send her to a lunatic asylum where she is terribly tortured and compelled to admit that the returned boy is her son. However, she never gives in.
Meantime, another case has surfaced into public view. A man named Northcott merciless kills about twenty boys in a chicken ranch with another complice his nephew Clark who is force to commit this kind of crime under the threatening of the former. Walter is apt to be one of the victims of their appalling deeds.
Later on, the case is brought to an open trial. The police concerned are dismissed from the posts. The evil suspect Northcott is found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging, but he is unwilling to acknowledge his crimes till the very end. Even before the day of his death, he still refuses to tell Christine whether or not he kills her son Walter.
Chapter ⅡThe analysis of seamy side of the characters People all possess seamy side although sometimes they purposely choose to neglect or at least try to hide it. However, that’s the truth, which means it just exists no matter how people react and act. Through many subtle things, it is easy to peep this side of human nature.
Nevertheless, that can not be totally and simply called a bad or good thing for it just another secret side of human nature which people generally don’t have courage to confront, thus unwillingly share with others, since they may not be respectable or morally right when that side appears and overwhelms them.
The movie
Changeling really proves this side of humanity
. This grueling film is based on an actual event. The ending of this movie can not provide the viewers a sense of relief. Instead, their mind may be haunted and afflicted by the wrenched fate of the characters. It seems that nobody is really forgiven and has a happy ending. They either live with a bloodcurdling memory as well as keen grief, or die with regrets and remorse.
The characters somewhat all deserve sympathy, as they are pitifully tortured or ruined by the seamy side of human nature.
The murder decidedly has dark side. He ruthless killed more than twenty lovely and innocent children who even had not taken a good look at the world. Moreover, he didn’t acknowledge his guilt and purposely didn’t tell the truth to Walter’s mother Christine Collins so that she harbored anguish and grievance for lifetime and couldn’t turn on a new leaf.
The LAPD undoubtedly has the dark side. As the protector of the city, they did not truly concern the welfare of the public, but put the political achievement and public image at the first place. They betrayed the citizen’s trust and tried to cover their mistakes and exceptionally ugly deeds with dirty means.
The doctor has dark side. They are supposed to be “angels in white” whose bounden duty is to
retrieve the dying and rescue the wounded, however, in this case, they collude with the “law enforcement agencies” to serve for their evil purposes as their sinister partners
Even the child--the false Walter--- shows his dark side. Confronted with a terribly desperate and inconsolable mother, he did not offer to say a word of truth from beginning to end.
ChapterⅢThe immediate causes for the seamy side of the characters 3.1 The darkness of the outside world No one can make sure whether human beings are born kind and honest, however, it is undeniable that a man’s depravity more or less has something to do with the environment. And usually, things indeed turn out to be so.
When the outside world is replete with vices and falsehood, one’s innermost world may not always have the power and persistence to be good, as, in most cases, it is much easier for one to go astray, because he or she is made and pushed to do that
