Hurstwood who is unhappy with his family life, is favorably disposed to Carrie. Carrie also secretly infatuated with Hurstwood’s pleasant address and graceful bearing.
Hurstwood persuades himself to court Carrie when he catches Drouet dating with a well-dressed lady. He frequents Carrie’s place and they meets each other secretly when Drouet is away. Subconsciously, Carrie holds that Drouet is a passport for her to enter the upper- class circle. They two are deeply attached to one another with each passing day.
Hurstwood’s indifference towards household somehow arouses his wife’s suspicion. Before long, she discovered Hurstwood’s affairs with Carrie via friends.
